Bisp: LHC dismisses plea for programme’s renaming

The petitioner submitted that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders are using the programme for political gain.

The chief justice advised the petitioner not to bring political matters to the courts.

LAHORE:

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial of the Lahore High Court on Thursday dismissed an application for changing the name of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), observing that it was a political matter that had no place in the courtroom.

The petitioner had submitted that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders were using the programme for political gain. He said the money for BISP came from the national exchequer, but was being handed out by PPP leaders as if it was a gift from them. He asked the court to order that the name of the programme be changed and that PPP leaders alone not have control over it.

The chief justice observed that Benazir Bhutto was a national leader who lost her life in the service of the people. He advised the petitioner not to bring political matters to the courts.
