LHC takes suo motu notice on 3 reports

Seeks reports on death of an inmate, couple’s suicide and a kidnap-cum-murder.

The chief justice of Lahore High Court has taken suo motu notice of the death of a Kot Lakhpat Jail inmate, allegedly caused by torture in custody. He sought a detailed report of the incident from Lahore’s district and sessions judge.


According to the report, published in an Urdu daily, jail officials tortured prisoner Allah Ditta after he refused to pay them money for letting him use his mobile phone. The use of mobile phones in banned in prisons.

Allah Ditta had to be admitted to the jail hospital where he breathed his last. According to the newspaper, a medical report had confirmed torture. The jail authorities, it said, had tried to hush up the matter by claiming that the inmate had died of a cardiac arrest.

The LHC also took notices on news of a couple who committed in Sheikhupura, allegedly after being harassed by local police. Police had detained Majeed and his wife Naila on charges of theft but had released them after a beating. Next day the couple consumed poison. The Sheikhupura sessions judge has been asked to submit a detailed report about the incident within a week.

The Lahore district and sessions judge has also been directed to submit a report about the kidnap-cum-murder of a teenager, who was the son of a government teacher.
