KARACHI:

A former trustee of the Mohammadi Dera Imambargah in Malir was gunned down in a targeted attack outside his house on Wednesday.

Ibne Hassan alias Shabbu Bhai, 58, a manager at General Tyres, was shot dead as he was walking toward his car to drop off his grandson to the school, Saudabad police said. Two armed men on a motorcycle came close to Hassan and shot him. The victim was shot once in the neck and died shortly after the incident, DSP Fakharul Islam told The Express Tribune. The body was taken to Jinnah hospital and was later handed over to the family.

Hassan had no personal enmity and the investigation suggests that he was killed over sectarian basis, said DSP Islam. The police have yet to register the case.

Following his murder, several people staged a protest and blocked traffic on National Highway, Malir, Jafar-e-Tayyar Society and Saudabad. The protesters burnt tyres and shouted slogans against the killings of the Shia community members.

The protesters later dispersed after peaceful negotiations with the police but DSP Islam feared the law and order situation may again be disturbed during his funeral planned for late night.

The Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen also condemned the incident. Maulana Sadiq Raza Taqvi said the government and law enforcement agencies have failed to stop the targeted killing of the Shia community.
