Alarming situation: Scientists discuss impact of climate change

Dr Hussain says that ozone layer is depleting owing to enhanced emission of smoke from factories and human activity.

In the list of a potable water accessibility index, Pakistan is placed among the bottom countries – ranked 80 out of 120 nations.

FAISALABAD:

Pakistan is facing severe threats from climate change, including risks of heavy floods, pollution of the atmosphere and water-borne diseases, which need to be overcome with enhanced practical work.

Speakers at the inaugural session of a two-day conference titled ‘Global Environment Changes’ made these observations. Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zakir Hussain said that the ozone layer is depleting owing to the enhanced emission of smoke from factories and human activity, which is responsible for climate changes including flooding and droughts.
He said that clean water is increasingly getting harder to come by. In the list of a potable water accessibility index, Pakistan is placed among the bottom countries – ranked 80 out of 120 nations, he added.  While talking about waste management, he also called for strengthening mechanisms to deal with city waste with the collaboration of scientists, industries and the government.
