Formula one: ‘We don’t wish Hamilton success’

Dennis says that team boss Martin Whitmarsh was ready to make Hamilton the richest racer of all time.

McLaren supremo Ron Dennis, who developed Lewis Hamilton from being a kid kart racer at 14 to Formula One world champ in 2008, reckons forcing the Brit to stay might have been a wrong move. Dennis says that team boss Martin Whitmarsh was ready to make Hamilton – who will race for Mercedes next season – the richest racer of all time but they opted against it. “Did we have the ability to create a situation where we could have stayed together? Yes. Would it have been the right thing to do? I don’t think so,” Dennis told The Daily Star. “We do not wish him every success — understandable as he is obviously going to be a competitor.”
