Independent departments of applied linguistics, which are separate from English and other language programmes, should be set up at universities, the participants of the first International Conference on Linguistics held at the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) said on Saturday.

They said universities should promote research on local languages. They said research should be aimed at addressing social problems. They recommended promotion of theoretical, methodological and collaborative interdisciplinary research. They said multilingual policies and pedagogies be developed.
