RAWALPINDI:

Over what they termed as victimisation of their colleagues across Punjab, young doctors from Rawalpindi carried out a protest on Thursday. Gathered in front the three allied hospitals of the garrison city, they were carrying banners and placards against the Punjab government and bureaucracy.

Representatives of Young Doctors Association (YDA) stated that the provincial government had started harassing the doctors more after the Gujranwala incident. Members from YDA from the city had a few days ago tortured the medical superintendent MS district headquarters hospital (DHQ).

The YDE however, did not observe strike and continued to carry out their duties in the three allied hospitals of District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), Holy Family Hospital (HFH) and Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH).

Over 150 male and female doctors also gathered in front of the new Campus of Rawalpindi Medical College at HFH and chanted slogans against the government and in favour for the doctors terminated. The protesters warned the government not to victimise the doctors for raising voice for their just rights and not to condemn them unheard.

Regarding the Gujranwala incident, the YDA Rawalpindi said a judicial inquiry should be conducted to bring out the facts and reasons that led the doctors get charged up.

Talking to The Express Tribune Dr Waleed Abbasi, president YDA HFH, said the doctors gathered outside RMC to express unity with the terminated and suspended colleagues.

Explaining the steps taken by Punjab health department, Dr Abbasi said six doctors had been terminated, over 12 were suspended and their salaries were stopped. Moreover, over 60 had been transferred after the Gujranwala incident.

He said YDA Punjab openly condemned the aggression shown by Gujranwala young doctors and always discouraged the actions that bring a bad name to the YDA.
