Morality clause: Petition filed for enforcement of Article 62

Dogar says Article 62 outlined the requirements for those seeking election to parliament.

LAHORE:
Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh of the Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan to a petition seeking the enforcement of Article 62 of the Constitution to stop “people who are corrupt and of bad character” from becoming members of parliament.

The Lawyers’ Foundation for Justice and Democracy, through counsel AK Dogar, submitted that only persons of good conduct and good moral character should be allowed to participate in the upcoming general elections.

Dogar said that Article 62 outlined the requirements for those seeking election to parliament and these should be implemented stringently. He asked that the Election Commission be directed to implement Article 62.
