The deadline for repatriation of Afghan refugees has been extended till June 30, according to a notification issued on Wednesday.

This decision was approved by the prime minister in a meeting held on December 12. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government will provide all facilities to refugees based in the province with valid Proof of Registration cards, it said.

Spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Pakistan, Dunya Aslam Khan, said there are around one million registered Afghan refugees living in (K-P) out of a total of 1.65 million in Pakistan. In the past few years, around seven million have willingly returned to their native country.

She added that at a meeting held earlier last month between the UNHCR and officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan the extension in deadline had been discussed, which was initially set at December 30.
