Security: Police to escort 1,531 polio workers in RY Khan

BAHAWALPUR:
An armed guard each would escort polio workers during the next vaccination campaign, Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Tanveer Hussain said on Tuesday.
The SP met Muhammad Furqan Tatla, the polio district officer at the United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF), and informed him that police will provide security to 1,531 teams during the campaign in Rahim Yar Khan district.
Calling children’s immunisation a national responsibility, SP Hussain said that the future of children was in the hands of the adults.
The first anti-polio campaign of the year in the district will start on January 14.
Tatla said due to the recent attacks on polio workers there were threats that had to be dealt cautiously.
The SP assured him of full cooperation.
He said that polio was a national problem and had to be a priority. He said polio workers were putting their lives in danger and volunteered for the campaign.
It was the government’s and the police’s prime responsibility to provide them security, he added.
He said those found hampering the campaign will be arrested and cases will be registered against them.

A quick response team will also be formed to monitor the vaccination teams’ movement. The team will respond to any unpleasant incident.
The station house officers will meet the polio workers in their respective areas and update them on the security arrangements.
