Turning sewage into drinking water

System turns sewage water into safe drinking water within seconds, is being experimented with in Sindh.

KARACHI:
A new water purification system, which turns sewage water into safe drinking water within seconds, is being experimented with in Sindh’s Thatta district.

The NGO Life Giving Force, which provided water solutions to Haiti quake victims, is introducing this cost-effective water filter in Thatta and hopes to expand to other flood stricken areas.

The filter can run on solar power or the cheaper option, two car batteries costing no more than Rs2,000. The water is then extracted from a pump from the water source and can produce 750 litres of clean water in two hours.

The filter system can be constructed in Pakistan with local materials, except for one of the three filters which has to be imported. Two filtration units are operational in Thatta, delivering water to IDPs in camps, but the NGO hopes to raise more funds with local NGOs and corporations to expand its reach.
