Six people died on Thursday in five accidents. A man was injured and taken to a hospital, where he was reported to be out of danger.

Three children died in a fire started by a candle in Hasilpur. Police said Abdullah, Ubaidullah and Ayat were visiting their uncle Kaleemullah in Rehman Chowk. They had come from Karachi to spent their winter vacations.

On Thursday night, Kaleemullah lit a candle when the power went out and placed it on a water cooler. A window curtain caught fire from the candle and it soon spread across the room. Neighbours rushed to their rescue. Before they were taken out, the children had already died. Kaleemullah was injured and was taken to a hospital. Doctors said he would likely survive.

A woman was killed and her husband injured in Mitha Tiwana on Friday by robbers who broke into their house at around 2am. The injured man was taken to the tehsil headquarters hospital, where he was reported to be out of danger. Police said four unidentified men entered Muhammad Arif’s house in Rajar village. Two of them occupied the roof and the rest entered the house. When Arif went to investigate the noise, they shot him. His wife, Sakina Bibi, who was inside, was also shot and died. Some neighbours rushed into their house after hearing the gunshots. The assailants fled.

The injured was taken to the THQ hospital, where he was reported to be out of danger. Arif later told police that the men first caught him and told him to handover the Rs1 million he had transacted from the bank earlier that day. He said when he told them he did not have any money, they shot him.

An FIR was registered against the assailants and a police team had been constituted to arrest the suspects.

Two people died in separate hit-and-run incidents.

A 20-year-old motorcyclist Shah Hussain Khan met an accident on the Sargodha-Sudhar bypass. Police said a speeding truck hit his bike. Khan died at the spot. The truck driver fled. Khan’s body was handed over to his family. A factory worker, identified as Bashir Hussain, 50, was struck by a car when he was crossing a road near Sohal. Police said he used to work at a nearby factory and was going home after a night shift.

A car ran him over, said the police. The car driver fled. Hussain died on the spot. Police handed over the body to Hussain’s family after they said they did not wish to prosecute.
