ISLAMABAD:

In an attempt to help guardians meet the expenses of orphaned children in their care, a non-governmental organisation launched its Orphan Care Programme at the National Press Club on Thursday.

Al-Khadmat Foundation President Dr Hafeezur Rehman formally launched the programme which aims to support 3,000 orphans at a cost of Rs90 million.

Director Orphan Care Programme Khalid Mehmood Abbasi told The Express Tribune that Rs2,500 would be given per child every month across the country to ensure orphans are provided three basic necessities, health, education and food.

According to Abbasi, the foundation will give the money to the children’s guardians, to help them meet their expenses. The children have been divided into 17 clusters. Each cluster will be looked after by an administrator, who will keep in touch with the orphans to ensure their welfare.

According to a recent report by United Nations Children’s Fund, there are 4 million orphans in need of basic necessities in the country, Rehman stated.

NGOs should support the government to provide for the children, he said. “A majority of children cannot continue their studies after losing their parents, so it’s essential to support them,’’ he added.
