Misbahul Haq had lost hope of winning the series at Eden Gardens after Pakistan were shot out for 250.
But exceptional performance by the bowlers – complemented aptly by a poor batting display by Indian batsmen – allowed him to smile and celebrate a series-success in India after seven years courtesy the 85-run win under lights in Kolkata yesterday.
“This wasn’t a winning score,” said the captain. “The pitch, the conditions and the strong Indian batting line-up meant that anything under 290 would’ve been difficult to defend. Our score gave us a fighting chance but nothing more. And then our fast-bowlers performed exceptionally well and by the 20th over, the match was firmly in our hands. The conditions have been exploited well by them and the quality of bowling has given us the edge over India in the series.”
India needed just over five an over to square the series. Virendar Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir started steadily, reaching 42 in the 10th over before the threatening Junaid Khan delivered. Umar Gul joined in as first-change and while Mohammad Irfan went wicketless in his opening spell, the awkward bounce and the ability to restrict run-flow remained key in the historic victory.
“It’s a happy occasion for Pakistan. The best thing about it is that we’ve been struggling with fast-bowlers but the way the three bowled in Kolkata, and before, and the kind of backup we have on the bench, it’s a huge sign for Pakistan cricket. The individual contributions are finally converting into wins and it’s brilliant for us. Playing the kind of cricket we’re playing right now, that is an achievement in itself.”
The fighting total, and the win, was ably crafted by left-hand opener Nasir Jamshed who just cannot stop scoring against India. Yesterday, he scored his third consecutive One-Day International century against India. Misbah duly credited Jamshed as the man responsible for taking Pakistan to 250 while his counterpart, MS Dhoni, called dismissing the opener a major challenge ahead of the final match in Delhi on Sunday.
“The score we made was courtesy the start we got,” added Misbah. “Jamshed is good and showing maturity but the best thing about him is that he wants to play through 50 overs. He has the talent and the strokes but his temperament and the composure is key to his success, something that will make him a better player.”
The teams now move on to Delhi for the final match of the tour taking place on Sunday. There is a training session and a High Commission dinner to take place before that but the ‘great win’ already in the bag, according to Misbah, is on level with the 3-0 whitewash over England at the start of last year.
MS Dhoni
“It’s disappointing. What you really want is the experienced players to perform so the youngsters can be groomed. If the seniors are not performing, the pressure then piles up on the juniors.”

@antanu g Please read this link. If South Africa can be boycotted for apartheid, Pakistan can be boycotted for terrorism.India has done a huge favor to Pakistani cricketers by giving them opportunities to play in India despite the deep state's pawns from Dawood to Hafiz Saeed wreaking havoc in India.
Pakistan has shown far more focus and determination to win in India. It is not easy and Pakistan deserves this victory.
As an Indian, its not easy to lose to Pakistan but the intensity with which the Pak team played deserves applause.
They badly wanted to win in India and one could feel it,.
More than the victory, i am excited for the upcoming fast bowlers Junaid and Irfan. Our team was never the same when we lost Aamir and Asif. New comers have to work hard and be consistent. Pakistan team is not complete without them. Relying on spinners is not our thing. I hope and firmly believe that they will not disappoint us. Good luck team Green!
@Oops: :) I know you got every reason to enjoy it. But the media is criticizing them because of their performance, not only in this series but the way the are playing from last 1 year. There is a huge politics in team and fights between the players, it is in most of the teams. And now poor Fletcher will be the BALI KA BAKRA. And talking about Pakistan, they played really well, especially bowlers. The Clean Bowleds were awesome,(though it hurt as I am an Indian :) ). But at the end, well done Pak team.
Fantastic victory team green. Icing on the cake however is the India media theater putting the players under the verbal knife :)
Well Played Pak. You guys truly deserved to win.
many congrats to pakistan cricket team, you guys(specially bowlers) deserved this win. good luck.
Fantastic series win, congratulations team Pakistan! bad luck to team India. After wining 2011 WC Indian team has slumped significantly raising questions in my mind that whether 2011 WC was credible or not since the way Pakistan team gifted semi-final to India. One last thing, these "anay do" promos by Indian sports channel are really funny, agaye hum aur lay gaye trophy, thank you ;) P.S no more aman ke asha politics in our cricket any more, politicians should stay away from it! Good luck team Pakistan for the last ODI, make it 3-0 :D
@Bee, I agree with you that the Pakistan one-day team is complete now. If world cup was to happen now, they'd be serious contenders. @Queen, Congratulations on winning the series. Your team played well and they were deserving winners. @Tongue, Extremism means, "Any political theory favoring immoderate and uncompromising policies", that is exactly what @Gen pasha retd: is referring to. Shooting done on Sri Lankan cricketing team cannot be forgotten for a very long time. Though I am in favor that International Cricket should return to Pakistan
@Gen pasha retd: Please elaborate the meaning of "Extremism"? So that we can condemn the right thing.
Congratz Pakistan! :)
Well played Pakistan team. You deserved to win the matches because we were outplayed in all the departments of the game. Just like Australia always play a boxing day test at Melbourne on Dec 26th, similarly every year, there should be a full series between these two teams, specified dates and venues. I wish Pakistan was safe enough for International teams to travel and play really competitive cricket. I am amazed by your fast bowler Mohd. Irfan. As Indian I am obviously sad that our team is on the losing side, but I have to admit that the better side won. Let us hope India beats Pakistan at least in Delhi.
Well played Pak.....you deserve to win....you out played and out classed us in every sector of the game...Indian team now needs some introspection!
Congratulations Pakistan :) Hum hain Pakistani hum to jeetain gai !!
No Indian comments here...... one should show some sportsman spirit LOL :)
After a long time Pakistan has a Natural ODI Team.. Solid Openers, experienced middle order, three paces(which Pakistan was lacking for a couple of years) and talented spinners....
Jamshed, Hafeez along with Shoaib Malik and Gul are the true heroes of our country. These sons of Pakistan have done their country proud. They deserve every commendation and award. When everybody full of doom and gloom, these four have shown what this country ordinary people are capable of doing.
Let it be known that for every venal politician, bureaucrat and military-man there is a Hafeez and Jamshed amongst us.
Jamshed, Hafeez, Malik and Gul are the best of the best... true HEROES!
Shabaash ... Indians were fixed right !!!!
BTW fire Misbah and Younus and we shall be better off ...
What happened to all that talk of boycotting pak-ind matches, lol every single match was sold out. To add insult to injury we out classed your "World Champion" team in front of your own people.....haha aane do/janne do
We must make Pakistan a safe country to give others the confidence to tour......not lip service but real safety which will only happen when we all condemn extremism
@Supersequel I also feel the same feeling of that 80s and 90s when we dominated the World Cricket and our Fast bowlers were nightmares for every batsman.
Great for Pakistan, Great for Cricket.
Beating India in her home-ground is not an easy task. Pakistani team deserves the credit for that. However, there are still a number of shortcomings in the Pakistan cricket team. The fielding needs work, the bowlers give away too many extras and above all there is a lack of consistent play. Only a couple of batsmen played well, the rest just came to the ground for a photo shoot.
Given, the international cricket is taken away from the nation and there is a lot of criticism from media to the team, bravo guys.
I have a strong feeling the old times inshallah are back! May this year bring positive changes to Pakistan in every field!
LUV TO SEE OUR HEROS IN FULL ACTION TEAM GREEN ZINDABAD.
We want 3-0!!!
Congratulations to Pakistan... but when will Pakistan be safe enough for the Indian team to tour??? Why can't the Indian team tour... and which cities will it be allowed in... Karachi or Lahore or Rawalpindi or Peshawar... You can gloat all you want right now but at least make the place OK to tour and invite our team sometime soon...
Cool and calm captain Misbah. You deserved our thanks for the leadership and providing environment to the team to perform positively and give us positive results more often than not. Most importantly with work ethics, hardwork and respect. Last 2.5 yrs you and your team have punched above your weight inspite of the embarassments of crimes, in-fights and emotional instability of the period you inherited as a leader.
Every member of Pakistani Cricket Team is a pride for Pakistan and I am a proud Pakistani.
