BAHAWALPUR:

A woman was killed allegedly by her husband on Tuesday. Police said the man also hit himself with the axe he had used to kill his wife.

Police said 25-year-old Ayub, known by his first name only, had attacked his wife, Zakiya, 22, with an axe while she was asleep in their house in Thal Hamza village near Taranda Panah.

He then also hit himself with the axe. Some neighbours, who had heard the woman scream for help, rushed inside the house and found Zakiya dead. They took Ayub to a hospital, where doctors said that he would likely survive.

An FIR was registered on the complaint of Zakia’s father, Allah Ditta.

The body of the deceased was sent for an autopsy.

Investigation Officer Muhammad Aslam told The Express Tribune that police had yet to talk to Ayub. He said he would be questioned once the doctors said they could speak to him.

In another incident, a man allegedly attacked his wife and daughter with an axe following an argument.

The injured were taken to a hospital, where doctors treating them said that the girl’s condition was critical.

Her mother, Shahnaz Bibi, told police that she had had an argument with her Muhammad Akmal, a resident of Allahabad, three months ago.

She said she had taken their three-year-old daughter and had started living with her parents.

She alleged that her husband was a drug addict and used to beat her.

She said she wasn’t able to cope with him any longer.

She said on Tuesday, he attacked her and their daughter while they were on their way to a market and fled. Shahbaz Bibi’s sister was also with them at the time and informed the police.

The injured were taken to Bahawal Victoria Hospital, where doctors said the girl was in a critical condition.

Police said they were looking for Akmal, who had been missing since the incident.
