Cough syrup: Drug Control Room set up to monitor sale

Dr Rauf requested the people not to use any medication, especially cough syrups, without a doctor’s prescription.

FAISALABAD:

A Drug Control Room has been set up to monitor sale of cough syrups across the district, Executive District Officer (health) Dr Abdur Rauf said on Monday.

This step has been taken on account of several deaths in Gujranwala and Lahore apparently following the consumption of cough syrup that doctors said was being used as a tranquilliser. The control room can be contacted through telephone on 041-9200013 and 041-9200016. Dr Rauf said the department had received several complaints against two brands of cough syrups- Tyno and Dextromethorphan.

So far, Health Department teams have confiscated 12,000 bottles of Tyno syrup during raids on medical stores and sent samples to the drug testing laboratory.

Dr Rauf requested the people not to use any medication, especially cough syrups, without a doctor’s prescription.
