While prospecting for oil, OGDC uplifts local communities
Plans to execute a number of projects in Karak.
ISLAMABAD:
The Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC) plans to soon execute a number of projects for the development of local communities living around the Nashpa oil field in Karak district. These schemes include water supply schemes costing Rs208.07 million, the construction of a road at the cost of Rs44.937 million, and the establishment of a permanent of dispensary in the area, says the company’s spokesperson.
He said the company has already completed several social welfare programmes such as water supply schemes, health care projects and construction of roads in the area with the cost of Rs42.75 million. He said that OGDC was playing a proactive role in supporting communities and inhabitants living in the vicinity of the Nashpa Field.
Water supply projects in the villages of Manzlai, Alwargi and Sanda Khura have been undertaken at a cost of Rs27.00 million. These projects provide clean drinking water through water dispensers supplied by 25 pressure pumps that were installed. He said the OGDC has also been facilitating the local community through the establishment of a free medical dispensary, and an ambulance that can transport patients in critical condition to the hospitals in Karak and Kohat.
He said the OGDC also conducts free eye camps to facilitate locals, and provides eyesight glasses and operation facilities to a huge number of patients of this area every year. He said that all services are provided free of cost, and the company even entertains locals during the health camps. OGDC has spent a total of Rs3.86 million in the health sector for local communities.
The spokesperson for the company said the construction of the Nashpa Banda Road is also underway, which will connect villages to the market and boost economic growth while reducing poverty in the area. Other small projects, such as the levelling and paving of a dirt track, was also executed.
To help the younger generation turn into positive, competent and trained manpower, OGDC has established a technical training centre at Karak in 2006, he added. Every year, 100 students are enrolled for training in various disciplines of the petroleum industry, and an amount of Rs27.86 million has been spent on providing training and stipends to students so far.
