ISLAMABAD:

The current spell of rains is expected to have a positive effect on Rabi crops, particularly major food crops of the season like wheat and pulses sown over a vast area, says an agricultural expert.

Agriculture Policy Development Institute Chief Abdul Rauf Chaudhry, while talking to APP here on Friday, expressed the hope that the rains would particularly benefit the staple wheat crop because it needed water at this time.

He said the wheat crop was quite satisfactory and final production figures would be known by the second week of January next year. He claimed that farmers were encouraged to plant more area with wheat this season following an increase in support price from Rs1,050 to Rs1,200 per 40 kg.

Chaudhry believed that adequate supply of inputs would also help enhance wheat cultivation.

He said the rains would also benefit crops such as fruits, vegetables and pulses.
