PESHAWAR:
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday approved the bail request of two Afghan nationals arrested for allegedly collecting charity for a banned outfit.
Muhammad Hassan and Khalid Khan were accused of giving threatening calls to people while posing as members of a banned outfit to collect ‘charity’ for such groups.
A resident of Hayatabad, Nazir, told the police he had been receiving phone calls from people who identified themselves as members of a banned outfit. They threatened him of dire consequences if he refused to pay Rs1.2 million as charity, Nazir added.
Following the complaints, the police traced the mobile numbers from which the calls were made and arrested suspected members of a banned outfit. During a hearing on Wednesday, the counsel for both Afghan nationals presented a letter written by Nazir to Justice Irshad Qaisar. The letter carried Nazir’s statement saying he accused the two Afghan nationals based on suspicion.
Consequently, Justice Irshad Qaisar accepted the bail request for both the accused for a sum of Rs0.3 million each with two reliable sureties.
Meanwhile, the same bench refused the bail request of Imran, who has been accused of killing a couple and injuring another woman in Nasapa area near Peshawar .
Imran was accused by the legal heirs of Seema Naaz and her husband Faizullah for killing the couple and injuring Naaz’s sister Taj Bibi. Imran was arrested on November 5.
Imran’s counsel Fazl-e-Haq Kohidamani maintained that his client resided around five miles from the couple’s house and that Taj’s statement was recorded by the police while she was semi-conscious.
The state’s counsel, however, told the bench that the postmortem report and investigations carried out by the police supported the prosecution. As a result, Imran’s request for bail was later denied.
