Judiciary should steer clear of political decisions: Kaira
Information minister says future caretaker set-up will be decided by political forces only.
CHISHTIAN/RENALA KHURD:
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Monday said the survival of Pakistan hinged on the continuation of the democratic system, adding that every state institution must play its due role in strengthening democracy.
Addressing an oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected office-bearers of the Renala Khurd Press Council and members of Chishtian Bar Associations, he said the future caretaker set-up will be decided by political forces only.
He went on to add that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would not allow anyone to derail the democratic system, adding that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has always manouvred elections.
The information minister also called upon the judiciary to avoid involvement in political decisions. “We respect courts and their decisions,” he added. Kaira lauded the government for appointing a neutral chief election commissioner for the first time in the history of the country.
Kaira also welcomed the return of Tehreek Minhaj-ul-Quran chief Dr Tahirul Qadari, saying the government would respect his standpoint in accordance with the Constitution.
“Allama Tahirul Qadri should seek people’s support through a popular public vote within the ambit of the Constitution and no one can be allowed to oppose the constitution,” he said.
To a question from lawyers on the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project, Kaira said that it was a key lifeline for Pakistan, adding that the multi-billion dollar project would be completed despite the hurdles it has faced.
