Protest: One killed, two injured in police firing
Minister orders suspension of police personnel; launches inquiry.
DERA ISMAIL KHAN:
One person was killed and two others injured in a clash between police and protesters over a land dispute in Daraban Bazaar, some 60 kilometres from Dera Ismail Khan on Sunday.
According to locals, the mob was protesting the construction of a boundary wall around the police station to separate it from a bus stand in the bazaar. “The protesters pelted stones at the police station and the policemen retaliated with tear gas and firing,” said an eyewitness, Abdul Rauf.
As a result, Umar Hayat, Shoiab and Sajid were injured. They were taken to District Headquarters Hospital in critical condition. Hayat was referred to a hospital in Multan but he died on the way. “A land dispute has been going between the police and the owners of the Darban bus stand, which the district government and the police are trying to sort out peacefully,” said an official at the District Police Officer office.
Meanwhile, Station House Officer Alamgir Khan told The Express Tribune, “Some police personnel were digging up the ground for the construction of the wall when Attaur Rehman scuffled with them.” He added that the accused was taken to the police station where the owners of the bus stand started protesting. He confirmed of opening tear gas and indiscriminate firing but rejected the claim that one person was killed during. Negotiations were underway till the filing of this report.
Moreover, MPA Israrullah Gandapur has ordered the suspension of the police personnel for attacking the locals and launched an inquiry into the incident.
