Extracurricular: Over 300 students take part in athletics championship

Students of 16 campuses of BSS participate.

ISLAMABAD:

Hundreds of young students from 16 campuses of the Beaconhouse School System (BSS) participated in an intra-regional athletics championship here at the Pakistan Sport Complex on Friday.

Students, their parents and officials of the Pakistan Sport Board (PSB) attended the championship,
which was organised by the school’s F-11 campus administration.

The main events included 100, 400, 800 and 1,000-metre races and long and short jumps.

The chief guest, Athletics Federation Pakistan President Major General (retd) Akram Sahi, distributed prizes amongst the participants.

Ali Haider, who stood first in the 800-meter race, is a student of BSS Educational Complex. “This is the second time I have won the 800 meter [race],” he said excitedly.

He said he hopes to become a professional runner someday and represent Pakistan in the Olympics.

Tahreen Khan from BBS F-11 campus, who stood first in the 400-meter race, lauded her school for hosting such a “healthy championship.” She said women need to realise that they too have a future in sports, but for that they need to invest sufficient time and energy.

Mansoor Ahmed, the regional sport coordinator for BSS north region, said it is “a good sign” that a large number of girls have started to participate in such competitions. From the 14 campuses of the north region alone, around 300 students participated, he said. Ahmed added that the students were selected after meeting set criteria.

Sahi, the chief guest, appreciated the winning students for their “superb performances” and urged them to come forward in the filed of sports.

“Don’t restrict yourself to textbooks,” was his message to the students.
