Tyno Case Handling: Drug manufacturers announce Punjab-wide strike

PPMA says Punjab government was not making the forensic reports from the drug laboratories public.

LAHORE:

The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) on Thursday announced the closure of all medicine producing factories in the Punjab over “the government’s handling of the Tyno syrup investigation.”

Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club, PPMA vice chairman Nasir Qureshi said the pharma industry in the country was suffering due to the Punjab government’s mishandling of the Tyno syrup investigation. He said this had forced them to stop medicine production.

“We deeply regret the loss of lives in the incident but it is unfair to blame the pharmaceutical company,” he said.

Qureshi said the Central Drug Laboratory’s forensic report had declared that consuming Tyno Syrup was not responsible for the deaths. He said those who died were drug addicts and there was no problem with the syrup. He said the Punjab government was not making the forensic reports from the drug laboratories public.

He said reputation and goodwill were the most important assets of any medicines company and even a single false allegation can result in loss of exports.

He said the government must consider the fact that the incidents were reported in Lahore where a large quantity of medicine was being smuggled in from India.
