Christmas at Acton House: Campbell to spend his first Christmas in Karachi

UK deputy high commissioner hosts dinner at his residence.

KARACHI:
A week ahead of Christmas, the fairy lights are already glittering at Acton House, where the British deputy high commissioner hosted a Christmas dinner on Saturday.

At the Family Christmas Carol party, the children, most of whom wore red, appeared happier than their parents as they sang Christmas carols with the choir. Some students of Origins Elementary School also performed a play depicting the birth of Jesus Christ and making the barn scene in Bethlehem much alive.

The British deputy high commissioner, Francis Campbell, told The Express Tribune that the event kicks off the Christmas season in the city. He was glad to see that the staff members of the high commission, and members of British Women Association and the United Kingdom Association of Pakistan were present.

Campbell chose a grey-blue cardigan for the occasion but felt a little cold in the city’s evening breeze. “It’s lovely to host it [the party],” he said, adding that this was the first time he was spending Christmas in the city.

How different is Christmas here than at home, in London? Campell replied that, “the build-up here is very different, but I hope it will be most enjoyable”.

As the children sang ‘Rudolph the Reindeer’, their parents joined them as well. Campbell pointed out how “children and Christmas go together”. “It’s very special to them,” he said.

The guests were served mini cheese pizza, raisin tarts and chicken sandwiches along with fruit juices. The food may have kept the elders entertained but the children were waiting for Santa Claus with his presents.

While he was nowhere in sight, there were rumours flying about that he would be dropping in any moment.
