NAB report: Bokhari to appear before cabinet panel

Will be asked to share evidence with govt today.

ISLAMABAD:

After National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairperson Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari claimed that Pakistan was losing up to Rs12 billion daily as a result of corruption, a four-member cabinet committee has summoned him today (Tuesday) to explain the contents of his report.

Sources in NAB and the law ministry confirmed that “The NAB chairperson will be attending the meeting as he himself requested law minister Farooq H Naek to let him explain the report’s details before the committee.”

NAB Spokesperson Zafar Iqbal Khan quoted Bokhari as saying, “The meeting of the cabinet committee should be called as early as possible and a representative from Punjab should also be called to face the committee.”

Last Friday, Bokhari had welcomed the decision of the federal cabinet to form a sub-committee on the NAB report while talking to the law minister and had requested an early meeting of the committee. He also wanted a representative of the Punjab government to attend, saying that the province represents the majority of the country and shares 65% of the responsibility for the alleged corruption.

The Punjab government has already responded by demanding a clarification of Bokhari’s statement, asking against whom he was levelling the charges of corruption. However, it is not yet confirmed if representatives of the Punjab government have been summoned or are attending today’s meeting.

The first meeting of the cabinet committee was held at the Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday with law minister Naek in the chair.
