KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to reinstate its 67 physically challenged permanent employees, who were sacked in February.

Four former KESC employees filed a case against the federal law ministry, the Sindh chief secretary, the chairperson of the provincial council for rehabilitation of disabled persons, and the power company.

The petitioners claimed that under the Disabled Persons (Employment and Rehabilitation) Ordinance 1981, the power utility must reserve two per cent of its staff positions for physically challenged persons.

The petitioners pleaded the court to order the power utility’s management to restore their jobs, and their termination orders be set aside. Before disposing of the petition, the SHC bench, headed by Justice Faisal Arab, directed the KESC management and the provincial government to ensure that the employees were reinstated.
