Reinforcement measures: Nawaz Sharif to visit Sindh today

Sources say he will clarify party’s position on Kalabagh, welcome newcomers.

LAHROE/LAHORE:
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif will be visiting Sindh today (Thursday), where apart from addressing the public, he will meet local leaders to clarify the party’s position on Kalabagh Dam.

According to Nawaz’s official schedule, he will leave for Shikarpur immediately after landing at Sukkur airport in order to meet PML-N’s Larkana chapter chief Azher Khan Kamario and offer condolences for the death of his father. The PML-N chief will later leave for PML-N leader Liaquat Jatoi’s residence in Dado district, where he will address a public gathering.

Nawaz last visited Sindh around two months ago. According to PML-N sources, he could not visit the province following his last trip till now due to the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Asghar Khan case.

The ruling had ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate politicians accused of receiving money from intelligence agencies to rig the 1990 elections.

Last week, however, the federal government refused conduct a probe against the accuse politicians and shelved the case. Sources say the PML-N’s chief visit was finalised soon after. They added senior party leaders insisted Nawaz resume his visits to the province in order to strengthen the party’s position there.

Among the PML-N chief’s first moves would be to clarify the party’s position on Kalabagh Dam and rebut Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) claims that PML-N favours the dam. While passing a resolution against Kalabagh Dam in the Sindh Assembly, several PPP lawmakers alleged that PML-N wanted the dam to be constructed. Ever since, while PPP has been cashing in on the anti-Kalabagh Dam fervour in Interior Sindh, PML-N leaders have been finding it hard to curry favour from the local populace.

His second move will be to welcome newcomers to the party. Sources say several local leaders, while being keen on joining PML-N, were only ready to join in Nawaz’s presence.
