GAKHAR MANDI:

A shopkeeper on Tuesday tried to burn himself and his son to protest alleged discrimination by an encroachment inspector during a clean-up operation on GT Road.

The town municipal authority demolished a number of kiosks and shops on both sides of GT Road and confiscated the goods and signboards placed displayed on the road.

Following public complaints, TMA Chief Officer Chaudhry Ansar Cheema, Encroachment Inspector Ejaz Ahmed Warraich, Sanitary Inspector Dr Nisar Ahmed and Senior Clerk Allah Lok Ansari supervised the operation on the directions of Wazirabad Assistant Commissioner Rao Sohail Akhtar.

The town municipal authority officials exchanged hot words with shopkeepers who protested the alleged relaxation given to some of their neighbours.

Saroia Market shopkeeper Mohammad Yousaf Butt tried to burn himself and his son after clashing with the encroachment inspector.

Sub-inspector Farrukh and other policemen overpowered Butt and snatched petrol and a match from him. Butt then beat his chest to protest the demolition of his kiosk.
