Advocates of peace targeted: One killed, three injured in ambush

Jamal and Zaman are key members and initiators of a peace process in the agency.

HANGU:

One person was killed and three others injured on Monday when unidentified assailants opened fire on tribal elders in Saidara area in Upper Kurram Agency.

At around 11:45 am, two prominent members of the Bangash tribe were heading towards Parachinar when assailants ambushed their vehicle as it passed through Saidara, said a political administration official.

Residents of Boshara, Bakht Jamal and Malik Mir Zaman escaped serious injuries, but the driver of the vehicle and the accompanying gunmen sustained gunshot wounds.

The driver died on the spot, while the three guards were critically injured. Jamal and Zaman are key members and initiators of a peace process in the agency. They also signed a peace deal with Tori tribesmen in October 2011, to end years of violence fanned by sectarianism in the area.

Paramilitary troops rushed to the area and took both elders to the Frontier Corps camp in Parachinar, while the injured were taken to a hospital in Peshawar. Deceased driver Nur Jamal’s body was taken to Boshara for burial.

FC personnel suspect the elders were targeted to create instability in the area.
