Messy city: Civic management DG removed
Painting competition, entertainment gala held at Lake View Park.
ISLAMABAD:
The Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) top civic management official was removed over the lack of cleanliness of certain parts of the city.
CDA Chairman Tahir Shahbaz toured the capital to inspect levels of cleanliness around the city on Monday. Unsatisfied by what he saw, Shahbaz removed Civic Management Director General Fawad Anwar and directed him to report to the Human Resource Directorate.
Shahbaz also directed sanitation staff to improve the standard of cleanliness in Islamabad or face strict action.
He said the sanitation staff should use all available resources to keep the federal capital clean for its residents. Islamabad is often host to national and international delegations as well as home to many diplomats, which increases CDA’s responsibility to maintain the city, Shahbaz said.
The CDA is also expected to launch an anti-littering campaign from December 15.
Also on Monday, around 300 students participated in a painting competition and entertainment gala at Lake View Park as part of the CDA environment conservation and cleanliness campaign.
The campaign is focusing on children to spread awareness about cleanliness and protecting the environment.
CDA Chairman Tahir Shahbaz said he believed children can act as catalysts of change because they can force their parents and communities to adopt environmental protection measures. Shahbaz said collective efforts are required to protect the park and natural resources of Islamabad.
Students from Lasania School System, parents and residents participated in the event. Prizes were also distributed among students who performed well in the painting competition.
CDA Environment Member Kazim Niaz said the civic agency is working in collaboration with schools, nongovernment organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders in the ongoing campaign.
The awareness campaign will continue on Tuesday with a climbing competition also at the Lake View Park.
