Human Rights Day: Protecting minorities a collective responsibility, says CM

Says federal government violating Pakistan's human rights through bad governance and corruption.

LAHORE:

The protection of basic human rights is the prime responsibility of the state, said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday, in a message on International Human Rights Day.

At the same time, he said every citizen had a social and religious obligation, a collective responsibility, of protecting all segments of society, especially minorities.

He said that the federal government was violating Pakistanis’ human rights through bad governance and corruption worth Rs7 billion a day. Sharif said that respect for humanity was vital in civilised societies and key to their progress and development. Islam had laid great stress upon human rights for all.

Various events such as seminars and walks were held across the city to observe the day on Monday, including a vigil at Charring Cross for the early recovery of Malala Yousafzai.
