According to the team sheet read out by chief selector Iqbal Qasim, Abdul Razzaq, Imran Nazir and Mohammad Sami have been dropped from the teams altogether while Shahid Afridi has only been retained for the shorter Twenty 20 format.
Asked about the decision to drop Razzaq, Qasim said that the names added to the sheet were decided through consensus including input from the captains of the two formats. He added that the focus with which the team had been selected was that “this team looks to the future,” and Razzaq, while a great player, was not a part of this.
When pressed that an inexperienced and unproven Asad Ali had been selected for the team instead of the experienced and proven talent of Razzaq, the chief selector said that Razzaq indeed senior, and for his talent, he deserved to be part of the playing eleven when selected, but “there we did not have space for him.”
Asked why Shahid Afridi had been dropped from the ODI team, Qasim said that Afridi was witnessing a dip in form, but he had been retained for the shorter format. Responding on why the all-rounder had been retained over Razzaq for the Twenty20s’, the chief selector said that Afridi is listed as a right-arm leg spin, while Razzaq is listed as right-arm medium pace hence the Karachi player filled a gap in the bowling department that otherwise Razzaq did not.
“Right now India's chips are down and they rely more on batting, in comparison our bowling is effective, and if batting supports us, then we can counter them,” Qasim said, before adding that consistency in both batting and bowling was the key in giving Pakistan an edge over India.
On the youngsters selected, the chief selector said that the height of the likes of Mohammad Irfan and Asad Ali gave Pakistan an advantage in bowling and could prove to be a surprise package for India.
The teams announced area as follows:
Twenty20:
Mohammad Hafeez (captain), Nasir Jamshed, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Umar Amin, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan, Sohail Tanveer, Umar Gul, Asad Ali, Zulfiqar Babar, Ahmed Shahzad.
ODI:

why dont these idiots see the potential of razzak, sifarishieys always in the team.. Keep skipping quality players like asad shafiq, disaster waiting to happen.
They should have brought in Ehsan Adil, Usman Salahuddin, Khurram Manzoor and Mohammad Rizwan. We need to have a total overhaul and drop the likes of Misbah and all the other older tested players who are in the twilight of their glory.
Disastrous team selection !!
Guys please watch what you drink in India! lol!
O crap!
Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat should have been axed from all forms of cricket.
Let's see if it is Match fixing or Inshallah...
Not a single Karachi player made it into the team! And then dropping Razzak?
Poor decision to drop Afridi for one days! his experience could have helped a lot.... y umar amin (a test batsman) in T20? y imran farhat keeps getting a chance despite failing consistently? :O
Also fawad alam should have been there for the one day! he is performing consistently at domestic level!
imran farhat? this must be some sort of a joke
@Ehsan
Asad Shafiq was injured during the recently concluded domestic t20 championship.
@Ehsan: Shafiq is injured. He has a fractured finger.
Imran Farhat !?!?! seems like he is really good at sucking d*. this time it is the zaka ashrafs! shame! lanaat and shame again!
@sensible: by dropping afridi , razzaq and arafat...we have dropped three all rounders....the world is turning towards all rounders and we are turning aour backs to them.....just look at the makeup of IPL, BIG BASH BPL teams and you will know what I mean.......if the aforementioned are old then why not select Hammad Azam ....???Although I see Anwar Ali selected but still is he alone good enough for future...no he ceratinly needs more all rounders around him........
Where is Ehsan Adil,,,,,,???
Currently the fastest bowler in Pakistan.... Born March 15, 1993, Sheikhupura Current age 19 years 270 days Bowling style Right-arm fast First-class 9matches 53wickets average 17.00 Twenty20 4matches 10 wickets average10.90 econ6.81 We plucked Waseem Akran and Waqar from total anonimity.....why not this guy....???? why are we becoming fans of 30+ medium fast bowlers like Cheema, Tanveer etc..why we are sticking with Under achievers like Gul....???..why not invest for future....???
Shoaib Malik, Umar Amin, Imran Farhat, Haris Sohail and the perennial Akmal brothers. No Asad Shafiq. Interesting.
Razzaq is rightly dropped but where is hammad Azam ? he is never given any chance in playing 11
@Ehsan, asad shafiq is injured
Great to see Afridi being dropped, he is such a liability to team, not sure why he even retained for T20's.
Dropping Razzaq is a disaster
nice team selection.. seems to be on merit.. good decision to drop Nazir and Razzaq
Imran Farhat back in the sqaud?? What a shame.
Poor Razzaq :(
where is Asad Shafiq?
