Weapons also seized in raids conducted by Rangers, CID and NAB in parts of Karachi.
KARACHI:
Sunday was a busy day for law enforcement agencies as around 47 suspects, including alleged target killers and gamblers, were reportedly arrested during targeted operations in four different parts of the city.
The main operations were conducted by Rangers in Ghas Mandi, Surjani and Korangi’s Bilal Colony. Around 39 suspects were taken into custody from these areas and shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning. The areas were cordoned off as over 1,000 Rangers personnel participated in the operation.
The first raid was carried out at the gambling dens in Ghas Mandi, Old City early Sunday morning. Around 15 suspects were arrested from the dens while more than 250 bottles of wine, gambling tools, and cash money were found in their possession. The raid, however, failed to capture the notorious gamblers, Ejaz Memon and Haji Ashiq, who escaped before the arrival of Rangers.
Following the raid at Ghas Mandi, the contingents moved to Surjani, cordoned off the entire area and started door-to-door search operation. About nine suspects, including an alleged target killers and arms supplier, were detained. The identity of the arrested targeted killer, who is believed to be with a political party, was not revealed due to the investigation.
Next was Bilal Colony in Korangi, where the door-to-door search operation lasted for at least two hours. Rangers apprehended at least 15 suspects from the area but they also managed to seize a large cache of weapons and ammunitions.
According to the Rangers spokesperson, 59 weapons of different calibre, including sub-machine guns, MP-5, rifles, pistols, armour piercing bullets and satellite phones, were found in possession of the suspects.
Separately, the Crime Investigation Department of the Sindh police claim to have arrested an alleged target killer, Yasin and five of his companions during a targeted raid in Zaman Town. According to CID SP Mazhar Mashwani, the raid was conducted on a tip-off, adding that the suspected target killer belongs to a political party and also involved in the targeted killing of two people in Zaman Town. A Kalashnikov and three pistols were reportedly found in possession of the suspects.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also detained two men, Mohammad Ayaz and Tahir Mehmood, during a raid conducted at Jamshed Quarters. The raid was reportedly conducted by the intelligence wing of NAB.
