Electoral success: ‘PML-N’s by-election win has rivals in shock’

Sharif brothers address winning candidates at Raiwind.

“Our political opponents have been left in a state of shock over the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s thumping success in the by-elections,” Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday.


Addressing a meeting in the presence of PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, winning PML-N candidates and other MPAs in Raiwind, the chief minister congratulated the election winners for putting on such a strong showing.

Sharif said the people’s love and trust in PML-N head Nawaz Sharif was clear for all to see. “The party’s strong policies and welfare programmes have received a vote of confidence,” he said.

He said corrupt rulers had not given anything to the people. He said an international institution had reported that Rs7 billion in corruption was committed daily.

He said Nawaz Sharif was the ray of hope for the people.

Sharif urged party candidates to solve people’s problems. He said the by-election victories were due to the PML-N policy of combining public service and merit. He said he hoped the PML-N would also win the forthcoming general election.

He said the government had taken solid steps to eliminate corruption in the province. He said the land record computerisation project would be completed next year and would eliminate corruption and exploitation by patwaris.Shahbaz SharifThe PML-N president Nawaz Sharif also congratulated the winning party candidates on their victory. He suggested that they work harder to ensure they win in the forthcoming general elections.

He said had the democratic set up not been toppled on October 12, 1999, Pakistan would have joined the ranks of developed countries by now. He said despite the billions of dollars in loans, national institutions were in a state of ruin. He said Pakistan was facing serious challenges, including the energy crisis, terrorism and extremism and there was a need for dedicated efforts to overcome them. He said the country’s destiny could be changed through hard work.

He praised the Punjab government’s ‘merit policy.’ He said the correct policies, strong economy and good governance could resolve the problems faced by the people.

I see two accusations leveled on PTI. First, that it will lose miserably, and second, that it is establishment-backed. Common sense suggests that only one of these paradoxical accusations can be true at one time.
