Fluid security situation: JUI-F to oppose any move to delay elections
Fazl denies govt offered him to head caretaker set-up.
ISLAMABAD:
Chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema Islam Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Saturday that his party would not accept any justification for delaying upcoming general elections.
“We will not accept any decision for the postponement of the elections,” the Maulana told a news conference in Islamabad.
He did not disclose whether he was privy to such a move, but said that the deteriorating law and order situation in the country in general, and situations in Balochistan and Karachi in particular, prompted him to assume that the election could be delayed.
“If it happens [elections are delayed] and any justification is given, we will not accept it,” he added.
The JUI-F chief denied the government has offered him to head the caretaker government.
Furthermore, he termed the Supreme Court’s judgment on the failure of the Balochistan government “undemocratic”. “The JUI-F is of the view that sending an elected government home is an undemocratic decision.”
He added that if the performance of the provincial government was not up to the mark, then people should have decided this through ballots. “The court should leave administrative matters to them,” he said.
Dual nationality
At the news conference, the JUI-F chief also opposed the government-sponsored dual nationality bill.
“We are of the opinion that Supreme Court’s decision over the issue of dual nationality is justified. The country cannot afford to have a dual national prime minister again,” he added.
Responding to a question, Fazl said that his party had turned down a government request to support the bill.
Kalabagh dam
On Lahore High Court’s (LHC) verdict on Kalabagh Dam, the JUI-F chief said the issue was of technical nature which had been turned into a political one. “Three provinces have already voted against the controversial dam,” he added.
“The [LHC] decision in these circumstances seems to have provided a certain political party a slogan for the elections,” he said.
