ISLAMABAD:

In an effort to clear a backlog of over 70,000 complaints pending disposal by the federal ombudsman, an office which has been vacant since 2010, a panel of three officers is being considered for appointment on acting charge basis till the appointment of a regular ombudsman, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

The three officials being considered for the panel are presidential secretary Malik Asif Hayat, Water and Power Secretary Nargis Sethi and Establishment Division Secretary Taimur Azmat Osman, the release added. The panel will work on acting charge basis until the appointment of a regular federal ombudsman.

The office has been vacant since October 2010 after Javed Malik retired as federal ombudsman. The office takes notice of public complaints against the federal government and its ministries, divisions, departments and other attached bodies. Most complaints pertain to maladministration in utility services and delay in dispensing relief by federal agencies to the public.
