KARACHI:

A district and sessions judge convicted a man accused of robbing a group of policemen and then firing at them, and sentenced him to six-year imprisonment on Wednesday.

Malir’s second civil judge, Sikander Ameer Pahore, sentenced Muhammad Jawed to prison after finding him guilty of looting and firing on a police party, and also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs20,000.

The complainant, Qaiser Shahzad, a truck driver, told the police that four men had intercepted his truck on National Highway, and snatched Rs19,000 from him and his conductor.

The men also took away the truck. After the incident, policemen chased the bandits and arrested two men, Jawed and Waseem, after engaging them in an encounter.

Two others apparently escaped.  FIR No. 314/2011 was registered under Sections 392 (punishment for robbery), 324 and 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code at Shah Latif police station in April 2011. The prosecution presented seven witnesses, including policemen, and empty bullet shells that were taken from the spot.

In case of nonpayment of the fine, Jawed will spend an additional six months in the prison, said Pahore, before remanding the convict to the prison.
