Food security: ‘Govt pursuing pro-agri policies’

PM says agriculture is an effective way to control poverty and provide rural population a means to earn livelihood.

“Government is pursuing agricultural policies to ensure food security in the country and improve living standards of small farmers,” said Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, during his visit to the Zarai Taraqiati Bank.


He said food security was a big challenge worldwide which had surfaced after depletion of energy resources, increase in population and water shortage. The government was desirous of strengthening the agri-sector which will not only ensure food security but also contribute to the economy.

He stressed providing incentives to small farmers as about 45% of the population was associated with the agriculture sector. He added that agriculture was an effective way to control poverty and provide the rural population a means to earn livelihood.
