Safety first: Open manholes endanger lives

Open manholes near Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Larkana, have been posing threats to patients and staff alike for the past few months. Most recently, the hospital’s additional medical superintendent Dr Dost Muhammad Shaikh fell in a manhole near his residence outside the central laboratory. The doctor was rescued by a passersby and was shifted to CMCH, and later brought to Karachi to undergo surgery. Patients complain that there are at least five open manholes on the road leading to the hospital’s OPD. The road is also in front of the Civil hospital. Commuters along Bunder Road, as well as, the street in front of Dari police station also have to take extra precautions because of open manholes.
