IG vows to get raises before retirement

Announces Rs10,000 for a DSP who kissed a man’s beard ‘for following sunnat’.

RAHIM YAR KHAN:
The Inspector General of Punjab Police on Saturday vowed to get raises for officials before he retires.

IGP Habibur Rehman said while addressing a police darbar and an open kutcheri.

He is due to retire after a little more than a month.

Rehman told police officials that he had sent a summary to the chief minister and was hopeful that he will hear “good news in the next few days”. He termed his last month in office as one that was “very important”.

He said he was trying to make some changes to the Police Rules for which a summary was ready to be sent to the chief minister. In his address, he mentioned one, according to which a DPO would have the authority to take action against an ASI who registers fake zimnees (police reports). He said he was hopeful that the amendments would be approved in December.

The IGP also announced cash rewards of Rs100,000 each for Bahawalpur RPO Rao Sardar Ali Khan and Rahim Yar Khan DPO Sohail Zafar Chattha and Rs50,000 each for SP (Investigation) Sheraz Nazeer and SP (Headquarters) Tanveer Hussain Teeno. He said two inspectors – Sadiqabad City SHO Abbas Akhtar and Division A SHO Jamshed Ali – would be given Rs10,000 each for treating citizens with respect.

Earlier, a lawyer Rafeeq Ahmad Chacarh told the IGP that a DSP had kissed his beard “out of respect for the Holy Prophet’s (pbuh)” after he had been proven innocent in a police investigation.

He said the DSP had told him that he had kissed his beard because the Holy Prophet (pbuh) had also one. Rehman asked him to identify who the DSP was, to which Chacarh pointed out Saddar Circle DSP Chaudhry Memoodul Hassan Gujjar. Rehman then announced that he would give Rs10,000 as reward to Gujjar for his love and respect for the Holy Prophet (pbuh).
