SC can annul any law through judicial review: CJP

He says being part of the judiciary a great honour.

KARACHI:

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday observed that the Supreme Court could strike down any law and declare it repugnant to the Constitution through the exercise of its power of judicial review.

“The power to enforce fundamental rights is conferred upon the Supreme Court and high courts under Articles 184(3) and 199 of the Constitution,” he said while speaking at the launch of the book, Law in a World of Change: Selected Essays in Memory of Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed.

He said being part of the judiciary was a great honour, but at the same time, it carried huge responsibility to adjudicate cases fairly and justly. “Being a judge is a sacred obligation. The Holy Quran and Sunnah have greatly emphasised the performance of this obligation,” he said.
