LAHORE: Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) stopped cleaning operations at the Town Hall and Lahore Administrators Office for several hours on Monday amidst confusion over whether the buildings fell within the terms of their contract.

Later, after the intervention of Town Hall officials, LWMC agreed to clean the premises once a day.

In the morning, Town Hall staff and visitors witnessed a dusty office and no sanitary workers cleaning up. The confusion was cleared around 11am when sanitary workers returned to clean the space in the middle of work time.

Contractor Albarak, which took over operations at UC-10 five months ago, had asked the 18 sweepers who usually work at the Town Hall to not report there on Monday.

An LWMC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 18 sweepers were designated to perform duties at different locations but were working at the Town Hall illegally for several years. He said LWMC employees were contracted to work on main roads alone and the city administration must pay charges for any extra duties. He said that the city administration had its own sweepers but they did not work. He said when Albarak was notified about this situation, it asked the sweepers working at Town Hall to perform duty elsewhere.

LWMC Manager (Operations) Asif Iqbal told The Express Tribune that the issue was resolved in the afternoon as LWMC staff cleaned up the Town Hall as a one-off. He said the LWMC will not provide the Town Hall any sweepers since that is against rules. He said 10 sweepers will be sent to Town Hall in a morning shift and will perform half an hour of duty before departing for their sanctioned locations.

He said Albarak has also provided 5 containers to dispose off litter in the Town Hall premises. He said mechanical sweepers will clean the Town Hall premises twice a day. He said this followed the pattern at the Commissioner Office, where Ozpark staff cleaned the premises once a day.
