FAISALABAD:

A death row inmate committed suicide inside the Central Jail Faisalabad by hanging himself with a drawstring from his trousers, police said on Wednesday.

Officials said the prisoner, identified as Nauman, had earlier been convicted in a 2009 murder and attempted murder case registered at Badami Bagh police station in Lahore (Case No. 617/2009 under Sections 302/324 PPC).

He was serving his sentence in the death cell of the jail. Prison authorities said the inmate removed the drawstring from his trousers and used it to hang himself from the cell bars.

Jail staff discovered his body hanging and immediately informed the police.

The body was taken into custody by Sadar police, shifted for postmortem examination and later handed over to the heirs.

Proceedings under Section 174 CrPC have been initiated.

In another incident, the Dolphin Squad arrested a suspected robber after an encounter in the Gol Sabun Wala area.

Police said the suspect, identified as Javed, a resident of Lahore, allegedly snatched a mobile phone from a citizen in Kutchery Bazaar within the jurisdiction of Rail Bazaar police station and fled on a motorcycle.

Upon receiving a call on the emergency helpline 15, Dolphin Team-II pursued the suspect and arrested him after a brief encounter in Gol Sabun Wala Bazaar.

Local shopkeepers reportedly caught and thrashed the suspect before handing him over to police.

The motorcycle and weapon were seized, and further investigation is underway.

Separately, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested a man for allegedly defrauding a citizen of Rs850,000 on the pretext of arranging a Saudi work visa.
