India claims Pakistan targeted forward posts by firing over 6,000 rounds from heavy weaponry in Poonch district.
Pakistani troops have allegedly violated the ceasefire, targeting 10 Indian forward posts by firing over 6,000 rounds from heavy weaponry along the Indo-Pak border in Poonch district.
According to a report by Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), the firing on Sunday night was the heaviest this year and came ahead of the ninth anniversary of the Indo-Pak ceasefire agreement. The border truce had come into force on November 26, 2003.
“Pakistan troops opened heavy fire with Medium Machine Guns and Heavy Machine Guns on 10 Indian forward posts along LoC in Krishnagati sub-sector of Poonch district last night,” PRO Defence SN Acharya was quoted as saying.
He added that the Indian Army troops guarding the border retaliated resulting in an exchange of fire, but there was no loss of life or property. The firing, however, triggered a forest fire along the Line of Control which was put off by the army with the help of locals, he said.
Indian forces had earlier claimed that Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire in Uri sector last month and then refused India’s request of a flag meeting.
India has persistently claimed that the ceasefire violations from Pakistan were meant to assist infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan.
