UNICEF collaboration: ‘Health programmes to be made efficient’

UNICEF to help improve maternal, preventive health.

Health Secretary Capt (r) Arif Nadeem has said the Mother Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) and Preventive Health Programmes would be made more effective with the UNICEF’s help.


He was presiding over a meeting at the Directorate General of Health on Friday. Special Secretary Babar Hayat Tarar, Director General Dr Nisar Ahmed Cheema, UNICEF’s Child Survival Specialist Dr Sarita Neupane, UNICEF’s Medical Officer Dr Tahir Manzoor, Extended Programme on Immunisation Director Dr Tanvir and Provincial Coordinator Dr Akhtar Rasheed Malik also attended the meeting.

They reviewed the progress on various health programmes underway in the Punjab in collaboration with the UNICEF. The meeting stressed the need for consolidated efforts for optimal utilisation of financial assistance extended by the UNICEF so that better health facilities could be provided.

They agreed to enhance the role of lady health workers to prevent diseases and conveying health messages. The meeting also reviewed maternity health facilities under the 24/7 programme at basic health units and decided to expand this facility to other health centres.

The meeting also reviewed the MNCH, the HIV/AIDS, the EPI, the malnutrition and the Iodized Salt programmes. The need for enhancing the EPI coverage for the protection of the mother and the newborn was stressed.
