Security breach: Policeman dies in grenade attack

Search operation launched by the police after the attack, culprits escape.

PESHAWAR:

A policeman was killed and two of his colleagues injured on Thursday evening in a hand grenade attack on a check post of the Pahari Pura police station near Sethi town.

The slain policeman, identified as Wajid Zaman, was an ex-serviceman re-employed by the police on contract. The other two, Amjad Khan and Rafiq, are still in a critical condition at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH).

“There were two attackers and they were riding a motorcyle,” said an official at the Pahari Pura police station.

A search operation was launched by the police after the attack but the culprits managed to escape. According to an official, the attackers were able to flee because the check post is located in a densely populated area.

The escape comes at a time when the entire walled city area has been sealed by the police for the month of Muharram. Although the Pahari Pura check post is located outside the walled area, it also currently hosts a large number of policemen on duty.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility. On the same day, the police defused a time device on the Grand Trunk Road.
