Thirty-seven per cent of all parents in the Rahim Yar Khan district have registered birth dates of their children in the last two days, Local Government Director Shahid Hameed said on Thursday.
Briefing reporters on the one-week birth date registration campaign in the division, started by the district government and UNICEF on Tuesday, Hameed said 46 per cent birth dates had already been registered in Bahawalpur district and 66 per cent in Bahawalnagar district.
XEN Aamir Naseem Khan was also present.
Hameed said that the campaign had been initiated to create awareness among parents about birth date registration.
Hameed said 43 per cent of the parents did not even know that registration was even required. Some 15 per cent, he said, did not know the procedure.
He said the target was to double the number of people who had entered the birth dates. He said local government workers had been tasked to go door-to-door to register birth dates. For this purpose, he said, orders had been issued to union council secretaries to make announcements from the area mosques.
He said no fee was being charged for the registration. First of the awareness seminars will be held on December 3 in Bahawalpur.
