The university has had 185 top positions to in the 1992-2010 period.

Students from the Government College University’s (GCU) undergraduate classes have been securing most positions in the  Lahore Board of Intermediate Secondary Education (BISE) higher secondary examinations since 1992. The university has had 185 top positions to in the 1992-2010 period.

According to the BISE data, the GCU bagged 10 top positions in 1992, 10 in 1993, 9 in 1994, 10 in 1995, 14 in 1996, 13 in 1997, 8 in 1998, 11 in 1999, 8 in 2000, 11 in 2001, 10 in 2002, 14 in 2003, 8 in 2004, 8 in 2005, 7 in 2006, 8 in 2007, 9 in 2008, 7 in 2009 and 10 in 2010.

Also, the passing percentage of the GCU students has remained around 95 per cent.

The GCU students have also been setting and breaking records for the most marks obtained during this period. In 2009, a GCU student, Muhammad Akram Karimi, set a record for most marks obtained by securing 1,036 out of 1,100. This year, Muhammad Ali Aun, broke his record by scoring 1,041 out of 1,100.


Talking to the media on Sunday about what he called a tradition of academic excellence, GCU vice chancellor, Dr Khalid Aftab, said, “Elders live through their children. Students’ success has been bringing glory to the alma mater.”

He said that the university emphasised both formal and informal methods of teaching including lectures, tutorials, seminars, conferences, workshops, debates, theatre and literary meetings.

He quoted the great philosopher, Immanuel Kant, and said that the GCU motto, ‘Courage to Know’, was the motto of enlightenment. The spirit of the dictum, he said, had allowed the university to produce graduates like Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Ahmad Shah Bokhari, Dr Abdus Salam, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Ashfaq Ahmad.

He added that the GCU faculty was committed to passing on the legacy of enlightenment to the future generations. The university was equally determined, he said, to provide a liberal and a tolerant culture to its students.
