Podium-finish out of Pakistan’s reach: Butt

Former captain rules out a good show in Champions Trophy.

KARACHI:
Pakistan hockey team has no chance of a podium finish at next month’s Champions Trophy in Australia, according to former captain Rehan Butt who was left out of the squad.

Butt said that the event featured top-ranked sides and Pakistan will start among the bottom ones in the tournament as per their rankings.

“Pakistan will be up against sides which are better than us in the rankings,” said Butt. “We shouldn’t expect much in this tournament.”

However, Butt said that the event will be a golden opportunity for youngsters to gain valuable experience.

“We will play rookies in the tournament and providing them the much-needed experience will be the plus point.”

Meanwhile, the former captain reiterated his desire to continue playing for Pakistan despite the snub.

“I think youngsters should get a chance as the team management is targeting the 2014 World Cup. As far as I am concerned, I am fit and will be available if team needs my services.”
