KARACHI:

Two gold traders have gone to court accusing two policemen of kidnapping them. They said that they have a video that proves their claim.

On May 21 this year, petitioners Zaheer Ahmed and Muhammad Asif Khan, and their friend Shabbir, were kidnapped from Bantwa hospital in Kharadar.

The kidnappers demanded Rs20 million as random, but agreed to let them go after receiving Rs8 million in Shershah scrap market. In order to avoid hassles with the police, the traders did not report the kidnapping but they changed their minds when they saw the alleged kidnappers on a television channel in June.

They obtained the video recording from the relevant news channel and then went to court.

According to the petition in Sindh High Court, the traders have accused Special Investigation Unit sub-inspector Saddat Butt, ASI Rashid and some other policemen of the kidnapping. The petitioners appealed to the court to prosecute the law enforcers and recover the ransom amount paid to them.

They also asked the court to direct the police officials to take action against the officers, register a kidnapping for ransom case against them and try them under the anti-terrorism law. Fearful of retribution by the accused police officers, the petitioners appealed to the court to restrain the policemen from implicating them in any case.

After hearing their arguments on Tuesday, the Sindh High Court division bench, headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam, directed the provincial home secretary and the police chief among others to file their comments by November 20.
